The Spartan Stuttering Support Group helps members of the Michigan State University Community to connect with one another.

Our goals are:

  • Support: Fostering a supportive community.
  • Education: Providing education and advocacy.
  • Engagement: Achieved through monthly meetings and ongoing support.
  • Sharing: Encouraging open sharing of stuttering experiences.
  • Connection: Building connections and understanding among members.
  • Destigmatization: Committing to breaking down stigma.
  • Communication: Promoting effective communication.
  • Inclusivity: Creating an inclusive community that celebrates the diversity of voices.

We organize monthly meetings where we share our experiences with stuttering and develop connections with others who understand stuttering.

Members

Jia Bin is a doctoral student and research assistant at Michigan State University. She earned her undergraduate degree in English Language and Literature in China and holds two master’s degrees in Secondary Education and Communicative Sciences and Disorders in the U.S. Jia leads the National Stuttering Association Lansing Chapter and the Spartan Stuttering Group, which has been a source of immense joy and personal growth for her. She finds deep fulfillment in fostering a supportive space for people who stutter, as the group has not only allowed her to empower others but has also enriched her own journey of self-acceptance and advocacy. In her free time, Jia enjoys running, traveling, and wandering in nature.
Trevor Moran is a senior neuroscience student from Brimley, MI, and a person who stutters. He joined the Spartan Stuttering Group in Fall 2023 and has been actively involved ever since. Passionate about learning more about stuttering, he values the opportunity to connect with others who stutter and share experiences through the group. After graduation, Trevor plans to continue his education with the goal of contributing to stuttering research and improving the lives of people who stutter. He aspires to be a positive role model, believing that every voice matters and that people who stutter can be successful and effective communicators. The Spartan Stuttering Group has been especially meaningful to him, providing a safe space to stutter freely and connect with others who truly understand the experience. Outside of academics, he enjoys running, cycling, and reading.
