Researchers at the Spartan Stuttering Lab

J Scott Yaruss, PhD, CCC-SLP, BCS-F, F-ASHA, is a Professor of Communicative Sciences and Disorders at Michigan State University. He has published more than 85 peer-reviewed manuscripts, more than 115 other papers on stuttering, and several clinical resources, including the Overall Assessment of the Speaker's Experience of Stuttering (OASES), Early Childhood Stuttering: A Practical Guide, School-Age Stuttering Therapy: A Practical Guide, and the Minimizing Bullying program (all published by Stuttering Therapy Resources, Inc.)

Megan Arney is a first-year PhD student at Michigan State University from Williams Bay, Wisconsin. She got her undergraduate degree in Communicative Sciences and Disorders from UW-Whitewater and her MS in Speech-Language Pathology from UW-Stevens Point. Megan joined the lab in September 2021. Her area of interest is stuttering, specifically researching treatment outcomes, the impact of stuttering on a person’s life, and concomitant disorders related to stuttering. As for her goals, she hopes to research and contribute to holistic treatment options for people who stutter to enhance their therapeutic experiences and ultimately improve the lives of people who stutter. Her fun fact is “I consume an embarrassing amount of peanut butter on a weekly basis!”
Caryn Herring photo

Caryn Herring, M.S., CCC-SLP is a person who stutters, speech-language pathologist, and a doctoral student at Michigan State University. She received her B.A. in Communication Sciences and Disorders from the University of Pittsburgh with a certificate in American Sign Language, and her M.S. in Speech-Language Hearing Sciences from Purdue University. Caryn has worked clinically with children and adults who stutter and was the SLP at SAY: The Stuttering Association for the Young for 5 years. Caryn is on the board of directors of Friends – The National Association of Young People Who Stutter and co-hosts the StutterTalk B-Team Podcast.

Amanda Kelly photo
Amanda Kelly is a first year PhD student from Massapequa Park, NY. She joined the lab in September 2021. She received her undergraduate degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders from the University of South Florida. Her goals are to teach CSD at the university level and conduct research pertaining to the stuttering community. Her special interests include microaggressions, mental health and physical health quality of life, and resilience framework. She also lived in Barcelona, Spain for 8 months teaching English!
Mariko Ito is a first-year MA student at Michigan State University from Northville, MI. She joined the lab in September 2021. She got her undergraduate degree in Linguistics from the University of Michigan - Ann Arbor. She is also working on a master’s thesis with Dr. Yaruss and will be applying to CSD Ph.D. programs in 2022. Her research interests include fluency, voice, and stuttering.
Erika Mueller
Erika is a senior at Michigan State University from Delaware, Ohio. She is a double major in psychology and communication with a focus in health promotion, and minors in cognitive science and communication sciences and disorders. She joined the Spartan Stuttering Lab in November 2020. After graduation, she intends to attend graduate school and obtain her master's in speech-language pathology. She is primarily interested in early childhood fluency intervention and hopes to positively impact the lives of many. Erika's fun fact is that she is vice president of the MSU chapter of NSSLHA, and has been a vegetarian for the past 8 years.
Jenna Fisher

Jenna is a senior at Michigan State University from Livonia, MI. She is majoring in psychology with minors in cognitive science and communication sciences and disorders. Jenna joined the Spartan Stuttering Lab in January 2020. After graduation, she intends to attend graduate school and obtain a master’s in speech-language pathology. She hopes to work as an SLP in a private practice or school setting with kids, and she is interested in continuing to work with fluency. She hopes to open her own practice one day! Additionally, Jenna is working on an independent study with Dr. Yaruss focusing on assessing parents’ views on stuttering variability in their preschool children.
